Demeter Association, Inc. is the United States’ representative of Demeter International. We are a not-for-profit incorporated in 1985 with the mission to enable people to farm successfully, in accordance with Biodynamic® practices and principles. Demeter’s vision is to heal the planet through agriculture.
Alliance of Biodynamic Organizations
Demeter is a member of the Alliance of Biodynamics Organizations, along with the Biodynamic Association and the Agriculture Section of North America. The Fellowship of Preparation Makers and the Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Biodynamics also participate.
History
The first Demeter chapter was formed in Germany following Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s “Agricultural Course”.
In 1924, Steiner (noted scientist, philosopher, and founder of the Waldorf School) held a series of eight lectures for a group of European farmers, who had approached him because they were observing a rapid decline in seed fertility, crop vitality and animal health on their farms.

The Demeter Biodynamic® Farm Standard reflects the Biodynamic principle of the farm as a living organism: self-contained, self-sustaining, following the cycles of nature. It provides the legal definition of BIODYNAMIC in the US marketplace. Sections of the Farm Standard include necessary elements of the farm organism, soil fertility management, crop protection, greenhouse management, animal welfare, and the use of the preparations.
