Organic Only Certification

Founded in 2002 and one of the oldest organic certifiers in the nation, Stellar Certification Services provides individualized attention and deep agricultural expertise to our members nationwide.

When the USDA implemented the National Organic Program (NOP) to provide and enforce a uniform marketplace definition for the term “organic,” Stellar was originally formed to provide organic certification for our Biodynamic farmers and processors. While the NOP standard forms the base to the Demeter Biodynamic standard, in order for a Biodynamic member to receive organic certification they must be certified organic through the NOP program.

To our delight, over the years, not only have Demeter members taken advantage of this service, but we have many clients who, while not Biodynamic certified, have still chosen Stellar as their organic certifier.

Currently, organic certification is reimbursable through the federal cost share grant program. Stellar certified farms are eligible to apply for a refund of up to 75% of their organic certification costs up to a maximum payment of $750 for each scope of organic certification. Paid invoices are submitted to your state department of agriculture for reimbursement post certification.

National Organic Program (NOP) Standards

Biodynamic Only Certification

Demeter USA is the only certifier for Biodynamic farms and products in America. It is part of a world-wide organization, Demeter International, that was first formed in 1928 and named for the Greek goddess of agriculture, to advocate Biodynamic agriculture and to certify Biodynamic farms. Demeter remains the oldest ecological certification organization in the world, active in fifty countries around the globe.

Demeter was incorporated in the USA as a non-profit in 1985. While all of the organic requirements for certification under the National Organic Program are required for Biodynamic certification, the Demeter standard is much more extensive, with stricter requirements around imported fertility, greater emphasis on on-farm solutions for disease, pest, and weed control, and in depth specifications around water conservation and biodiversity. As consumers gain more understanding about the Biodynamic requirements and more experience with the quality of Biodynamic products, farmers and brands are beginning to feel that Biodynamic certification is all they require.
