Nova Sayers - Stellar Board President
Nova works with companies and organizations along the food value chain to bring healthier food to our plates and build healthy relationships between food producers, communities and the environment that sustains them. She uses tools like brand standards, supplier capacity building, 3rd party certification, and responsible sourcing policies to build food systems with integrity. As Senior Business Development Manager for the public health & safety company NSF International, she helps farmers, brands and retailers ensure transparency and deliver safe food that meets our values for health and sustainability. Nova also advises a grant fund called Cultivating Change that invests in small scale local farms nationwide. She brings the board more than 16 years of experience in international trade promotion, sales & marketing, product & service innovation, and key account management. She has served in many business development and management roles, specializing in the professional services, paper, food and agriculture industries. She is a certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor and GRI Sustainability Reporter, she earned BA from the University of California at Berkeley in International Political-Economy. Nova lives in Northern California and enjoys cultural diversity and farmers markets wherever she goes!
Anna Brittain -
Stellar Secretary and Treasurer
Anna has worked locally, nationally, and internationally, and is most interested in positive action! She has over a decade of experience in environmental management, with a Master of Environmental Science & Management from the UC Santa Barbara Bren School. Currently, she is working as a sustainability consultant, helping to grow the Napa Green Winery and Land certification programs, and building a small-scale wine tour business, Deep Roots Tours, making the connection between conscientious, sustainable winegrowing and spectacular wines.
As a sustainability consultant Anna has worked with businesses to assess and reduce their energy, water, waste, and carbon footprints, establish environmental policies and strategic plans, and build internal and external communications and engagement. She worked for several years in Washington, DC and most recently served as the Center Manager for the Center for the Management of Ecological Wealth at the environmental economics think tank Resources for the Future (RFF). On the international level Anna has worked on international climate policy negotiations, as well as climate change mitigation and adaptation in the Global South.
A longtime hospitality executive recognized for her leadership on global sustainability issues, Mary-Elizabeth Gifford's approach to strategy and corporate social responsibility is known for being equal parts educational, entrepreneurial, and editorial. Known for her collaborative approach to global team-building, in addition to serving as a Board member of both Demeter and Stellar, she is immediate past Chair of the Washington National Spa Alliance, and Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Center for Responsible Travel, based in Washington, D.C., and Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.
Mary-Elizabeth, a native New Yorker, graduated from Brown University and had a year of post-graduate study at Harvard University, where she was an Affiliate of Harvardâ€™s Nieman Foundation for Journalism. She serves as an adviser to the advocacy non-profits WellnessWarrior.Org<http://wellnesswarrior.org/> and PolicyWell.com<http://PolicyWell.com>. Mary-Elizabeth has presented at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., at the annual LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) Forum in Boulder, as well as at the International Spa Association, the Global Spa Summit, and on the "green faculty" of the Health and Beauty Association. She is on the Global Wellness Institute's Beauty Task Force.
A prize-winning former journalist, Mary-Elizabeth's work has been published in Vanity Fair, the Los Angeles Times, New York magazine, and elsewhere. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband, an editor at NPR, and their family.
